Surely I'm misunderstanding something here....did he REALLY mean to suggest burning calories and fossil fuel consumption are the same thing?
hjsmith81 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
You agree w/ bashing phelps? How do you figure?
Suiram82 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Talk about throwing about throwing a rock in a glass house...

Why does anyone listen to his stream-of-consciousness idiocy? It's an invalid comparison- Phelps does not wildly consume without a diet plan or exercise plan, and it does not compare to fuel energy policy.
metalxmustang (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
i think he is bashing phelps too, which I absolutely agree with

And I'm not conservative. This indeed does make sense, in its own insular way. See, I can recognize analogies, similes, even the occasional generalization. It's called abstract reasoning. I have it, and I don't ignore it just because it's the "enemy." He might be wrong about his conclusions, but that doesn't have anything to do with whether or not it makes sense, a principle many people miss. And fuck you for the kool-aid comment.

His point (in the full audio) is clearly that a great deal of energy consumption is required to be great, a metaphor he uses to describe not other athletes, but nation states. And since energy is a pressing political concern, and the two parties actually have very different ideas about it (unlike many other things), it seems like an effective, if slightly shoehorned, comparison to make during the final stretch of the presidential campaign. Make sense yet? |
