Sam Tanenhaus is the editor of The New York Times Book Review and the author, most recently, of The Death of Conservatism, a controversial new book which argues that the contemporary right has forsaken the intellectual rigor and seriousness of William F. Buckley and Whittaker Chambers in favor of shallow partisan politics. On September 8, Reason.tv's Nick Gillespie sat down with Tanenhaus before he delivered a talk at Washington's American Enterprise Institute. "What conservatism has lost," says Tanenhaus, "is the capacity to elevate the argument. The genius of Buckley was that he made liberals think and write better."Approximately 8.30 minutes. Shot by Meredith Bragg and Dan Hayes. Edited by Dan Hayes.Go to http:/reason.tv for more videos and downloadable versions of this video.

Conservatism exists today only to service the wealthy, who value their own wealth above the greater happiness of humanity.I therefore suggest that we expunge these proponents of anti-humanism forcefully.

So Sam--after the ass kicking that the Dems received in the November midterms, when can we expect your next tract?

I stopped calling myself a Republican back in 2006 after all the corruption, scandal, and stupidity that happened that year with the party. Republicans deserved to lose in 2006 and 2008. They had both houses of Congress and the White House which was theirs to lose--and they did. What I realized was that most Conservatives are Republicans, not all Republicans are Conservatives. I always have been and will be a Washington, Lincoln, Reagan Conservative.

I hate being called a right winger!

Silvsilvchan I make it easier, I call them republicans, its much easier to tell the difference that way, instead of looking for quotations.
Silvsilvchan (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
I guess we did. But what you need to understand is you aren't speaking for all 'conservatives'. Again, I am putting it into quotations because I don't believe McCain and Bush were conservative. They are what have been labeled "Neo-conservatives" or compassionate conservatives. But they, at this point, may as well have taken the conservative mantle. Its why whenever I use the word conservative I put it into quotations, because it is a title that has come to represent two different groups.
samuils (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Silvsilvchan Well I guess then we have started on a wrong note. I think McCain would have been better then Obama, but obviously not better then Ron Paul. And just a note, when we had the primaries, conservatives were very upset that all we got is McCain, which we called W Bush #2
Silvsilvchan (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
People jumping Obama out for his stimulus packages but ignoring the ones Bush and McCain helped pass is my problem. People accusing Obama of attacking our constitution (he is) but ignoring the various attacks Bush and, yes, McCain made on them is my problem. The Patriot Act, Fisa Accords, Real ID act... Obama, McCain, and Bush all supported these. Yet you only bitch about Obama?
Silvsilvchan (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
I wasn't making up facts. I was suggesting there are people out there who aren't really part of this movement. Believing McCain to be better is your right. I disagree. Calling me ignorant for it begets hostility from me. As does accusing me of having "LOL zero knowledge of conservatism". You don't consider McCain one of these moderate conservatives? You think McCain is better than say, Ron Paul or Patrick Buchanan? People that supported him and Bush jumping into -MY- movement is my problem.
