Magazine Senior Editor Brian Doherty discusses the differences between libertarianism and traditional conservative ideologies.-----Brian Doherty considers "Radicals for Capitalism: A Freewheeling History of the Modern American Libertarian Movement."This illuminating, lively history of a political movement on the rise - told through the life stories of its standard bearers - casts new light on the intellectual and political history of post-WWII America. Doherty traces the evolution of libertarianism through the unconventional stories of Ludwig von Mises, F.A. Hayek, Ayn Rand, Murray Rothbard, and Milton Friedman, and their personal battles, character flaws, love affairs, and historical events that altered its course. In so doing, he provides a fascinating new perspective on American history, from the New Deal through the culture wars of the 1060s to today's divisiveness. In February, the Wall Street Journal noted, "With 'Radicals for Capitalism', Brian Doherty finally gives libertarianism its due...Mr. Doherty has rescued libertarianism from its own obscurity, eloquently capturing the appeal of the 'pure idea', its origins in great minds and the feistiness of its many current champions." - Cody's BooksBrian Doherty is a senior editor of Reason, the libertarian monthly named one of "The 50 Best Magazines" three out of the past four years by the Chicago Tribune. Established in 1968 and a four-time finalist for National Magazine Awards, Reason has a print circulation of 40,000 and won the 2005 Western Publications Association "MAGGIE" Award for best political magazine.

I'm a libertarian, I've always had socialist ideals, it's just that I'm aware that pragmatically governments undermine people's freedom. The problem is that people can't accept life without a patriarchical figure...Nietzsche said god is dead, Freud said god is dad.One day we might be able to swap god with government

libertarianism is not conservatism conservatives have a commutarian view on cultural issues but like libertarians have a individualistic view on the economy liberatarians have an individualistic view on both cultural and economic issues

BeondaPale, your argument about "perfect regulation" in Monopoly just proved profwito's point that regulation creates monopolies!
BeondaPale (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Sorry, whenever government helps to create a monopoly it's called corruption, collusion, Fascism or dictatorship. How do ANTITRUST regulations create monopolies?
BeondaPale (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
No, you can establish antitrust laws. Laws that prohibit practices that restrict free trade and competition between businesses.

I was using the EU regulations on monopolies, whereby you own more than 40% of an industry.A monopoly in the absolute sense is dangerous, yes, but what are you gonna do? Start telling people they can't buy stuff when the owner wants to sell it and the buyer has the money?
BeondaPale (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
You don't seem to understand what a monopoly is.Ok, say I own all the say oil fields in the world and there are no more oil fields left in nature -- THAT would be a true monopoly. How can a new company be created to to seize upon customer dissatisfaction and supply oil when another company (the monopoly) owns all of it?
whiteworldreturns2 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
A NEW company will be created to seize upon customer disatisfaction.
