Richard Heinberg makes no pretense that technological fixes will come along to bail out industrial civilization from the conundrum of Peak Oil, which is why he's so adamant about the Power Down approach, re-localization, transition initiatives, etc. Because of the profundity of his ideas, I would find it hard to give Heinberg anything less than a 4 on any of his books.

Remembering that people are creatures of habit is why Microsoft is preinstalled on so many computers. This mass centralization is why mass failure will occur for many people. Trade-offs occur and after international power distribution fails then national only electric distribution will happen. Average age of infrastructure happens to increase with more failure points then items will be forced to become local resulting from rot caused by wars.
