Is
the overthrow of capitalism a necessary condition for the achievement of
women's liberation?
Patriarchy and capitalism, forms of social
oppression, are connected to a large degree in today's society. Neither is
entirely dependent on the other, but both gain massive benefits from existing
side by side. It would seem that they are intertwined to the point where both
derive from each other much of what allows them to function. However, it would
be overly simplistic to suggest that the elimination of one would bring an end
to the other. In spite of the benefits the two forms derive from this
co-existence they are not mutually dependent. Hence - if an end is sought to
social oppression in today's world both capitalism and patriarchy need to be
eradicated.
