No more work for Senator Joe Lieberman
After 4 terms in office, Senator Joe Lieberman (I-CT) has announced that he is effectively retiring from the Senate. The New York Times accounts that a press conference in a Marriott hotel in Stamford was where the announcement came from Lieberman although it was expected. He explained that he planned on moving on to other things. “When Regis leaves television, I’ll leave the Senate” is what he joked about saying to his wife. The retirement from TV is something Philbin announced recently. In order to speak about the way both parties are acting, Lieberman also explained that he did not fit in the Democrat or Republican mold right now. Both independent Senators within the U.S. senate lean Democrat which Lieberman is one of.
Ending a career in politics
It has been about 40 years of Joe Liebermann being in office. After serving for 10 years as a State Senator in Connecticut, he was elected the Attorney General of CT from 1983 to 1989. He then ran to be in the U.S. senate during the time. NPR accounts that he lost in 2006 to Ned Lamont in that race. He successfully ran as an Independent, though he maintained ties to Democrats. As he endorsed John McCain within the 2008 election because of Barack Obama’s lack of experience and because he was for the war in Iraq, he has been criticized.
Possible new applicants
His place might have many successors. Many want the position. Linda McMahon, who unsuccessfully ran as the Republican candidate against Richard Blumenthal, is rumored to still relish the thought of a Senate seat. The previous Secretary of State for CT, Susan Bysiewicz has already announced she would run for his seat in 2012.
