The United States of America is the world’s oldest democracy in the truest sense of the concept. Or so it is said. What our forefathers created was a very effective system that empowered the individual and created a strong government but also included measures to keep the powers of the government in check. Their aim was to create a radical system that placed power where it belonged, with the people. They were right, they designed the constitution to be inherently flexible. Something that could evolve and change as required. However, this very flexibility is being exploited by groups and individuals to further their own interest and thereby creating a system that suppresses individual freedom.
The forefathers mandated the existence of only two political parties. Ensuring a conflict of opinions and ideas but not a conflict of interest. The republicans are the ones with conservative views while the democrats believe in more liberal policies. This fundamental difference in ideologies ensures that the congress gets to see both sides of the coin before any decisions are made.
The democrats, for example, oppose military spending whereas the republicans support it. The democrats opine that there are other more important matters to focus on rather than spending too much on the armed forces. To an extent what the republicans believe might be essential to the cultural and economic integrity.
However, the liberal policies of the democrats helps push the nation forward. This contrast in function and ideology helps ensure that a constant balance is maintained at all times. Certain conservative policies are steeped in common sense which the liberals lack. The republicans, with their conservative views aim to ensure that the system remains stable. Meanwhile the democrats want to bring changes with a constant drive for progress.
The republicans are pro-business and are in strong favor of capitalism. The democrats, however, want the rich to pay more taxes while the republicans want a reduction in taxes for everyone. From some perspectives, it would seem that conservative views are totally logical and that some liberal policies sow the seeds of plutocracy, as pointed out in many conservative blog posts. Unchecked power to the government, in the name of security, is a threat to the entire nation. It is a threat to everything that the forefathers stood for.
