Health Care Reform: President Obama Beat The Republican Party & The Health Insurance Industry
President Obama: Health Care Reform
After more than a full year of a hard fought political battle with the Republican Tea Party and their allies at Fox News and the health insurance industry, President Barack Obama and the rest of the Democratic party were able to make the health care reform bill the law of the USA.
It is very difficult to exaggerate the importance of the health care victory for the President and for the American people. It is a legislative victory so big that it propels President Obama into the discussion about the greatest US Presidents since 1900. Universal health care has been a goal for forward thinking Americans since Republican Theodore Roosevelt proposed the concept in the early 1900s.
As big as the victory is for Obama, it's just as huge of a loss for the Republicans because they put all of their chips in on trying to defeat this bill and they were beat. Far right wing Republican Senator Jim Demint of South Carolina was caught on tape saying he thought the Republicans could "break" Obama if they could beat this health care reform bill. He said it would be Obama's "Waterloo" but as David Frum wrote in a recent article, it's now the Republican party's "Waterloo."
The reason for this is because all of the ridiculous lies that the Republican party and Fox News told about health care reform only "work" if the reform never becomes the law. Then they can pretend that they "saved America" from something and since it was never realized there'd be no solid evidence that they were totally full of it. This is how they won huge in 1994 after defeating President Clinton's attempt at health care reform.
But now that health care reform is law average Americans will eventually find that they actually like the changes made by the bill because they are extremely positive for most Americans.
The GOP is now campaigning for the November elections with the ludicrous slogan "Repeal and Replace" but this slogan will seem increasingly ridiculous as average Americans find out what a huge positive the reform actually is. A majority of the American people will wake up and realize that the Republican party has done nothing but lie about this topic for the last year and this should lead to a good November for the Democrats in 2010.
