Senate's Leader Veers From Bush Over Stem Cells
WASHINGTON, July 28 – In a break with President Bush, the Senate Republican leader, Bill Frist, has decided to support a bill to expand federal financing for embryonic stem cell research, a move that could push it closer to passage and force a confrontation with the White House, which is threatening to veto the measure."I am not a little surprised. His background in medicine would indicate that he is sympathetic to the research side of this issue. This issue is black and white. As much as I dislike the idea of stem cell research, because I am opposed to using humans (and even if they are not fully developed, they are humans, I don't care what shine you put on the apple) for experimentation. Granted, this embryonic material is already available, but I have a MORAL objection to this kind of research. I feel for the people who are suffering with disability and disease who think this research will help them. I truly do. I am not heartless, but I also respect human life. This is a dilly of a pickle!I can really only support a Presidential veto in this matter. more…
